Credit Bureau: Fraud Reporting Procedures

Reporting credit bureau fraud is never a pleasant situation. Unfortunately millions of Americans become victims of fraud each year. Here are simple steps to report the fraudulent activity to the credit bureaus.

Gather All Documentation
You will want to start the process by gathering all documentation you have collected, related to the fraud. This can include credit card statements, police reports, and court reports. Many credit card companies will require a police report be filed before they will deal with true fraud, so be sure to file this first.

Also, if any civil actions have been taken against as a result of the fraud, be sure you have the proper court documentation. Also, utility bills are an often overlooked area of fraud. If you have found that someone else is using your name for any utility service, gather the proper documentation and write the utility company a letter and ask them to shut off service.

Reporting to the Bureaus
Each credit reporting bureau will have a different number or way to report fraud. In each case you will want to start by ordering a copy of your credit reports from all of the three major bureaus. This will allow you to see what items need to be disputed on each report. The filing process can take a long time, so give yourself at least 30 minutes to one hour to speak with the representatives and have your documentation available. Also, be ready to fax or mail all three agencies copies of your supporting documentation.

Experian: Call 888-397-3742 to report fraud to Experian.

Contact the FTC
The Federal Trade Commission will have information available to you regarding identity fraud. You can also file fraud complaints through them. You can visit their website or call their Identity Theft Hotline at 877-438-4338. They will require an affidavit before accepting any complaint and you can complete the affidavit either by going online, mail or by fax.
