Special Assessment Tax

The special assessment tax is a tax levied by government that against a property owner for special funding.  The tax is levied on the property owner in order to finance public improvement projects or to enhance the value of an existing project. The tax is used to help fund public projects, such as the installation of sewer lines, streetlights and recreational parks. The special assessment tax is said to add value to the quality of life of the property owner because the owner is considered to benefit from improvements. If the tax exceeds the compensation, then the remaining amount is added to the basis of the property.
